Victoria Falls Bridge Tour

Victoria Falls Bridge & Visitors Centre, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Duration~3–4 hours

About the Adventure

Delve into over a century of history on this engaging Historical Bridge Tour, exploring the iconic 1905 Victoria Falls Bridge, once the highest railway bridge in the world. This engineering marvel, designed by George Andrew Hobson and Ralph Freeman, connects Zimbabwe and Zambia, suspended 128 meters (420 ft) above the Zambezi River in the dramatic Batoka Gorge. The tour features a captivating 45-minute theatrical performance by an actor portraying chief engineer Georges Imbault, bringing to life the audacious Victorian feat of constructing this 198-meter (650 ft) steel arch bridge in just 14 months. Following the performance, explore the Visitors Centre's historical displays and enjoy free time to absorb the surroundings. For an optional thrill, descend onto a network of catwalks beneath the bridge, securely harnessed and briefed, for a vertiginous view straight down into the gorge and a unique perspective of the bridge's structure. From this vantage point, you'll also enjoy spectacular views of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River, and may even feel the spray during high-water season (March-May). This tour is ideal for history buffs, families, and anyone keen to understand the landmark they're photographing, offering insights into Cecil Rhodes' vision for a Cape to Cairo railway and the bridge's designation as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Minimum age for participation is 10 years.
